Toledo police say the crime rate is down. The department compared January and February of this year to the same time last year. During that two-month timeframe crime is down across the board.
"We take pieces and parts of the whole police department that will best solve that particular crime, and we work together," says Sergeant Joe Heffernan. "And we come up with some good results hopefully."
There's been one less homicide this year compared to the same time last year. Overall, crime is down 22 percent.
Sgt. Heffernan says the crime analysis team, uniformed officer and Sky Cop, the department's eyes in the sky, contribute to the decline. The biggest drop was in burglaries, which had a 28 percent drop.
In fact, officers recently stopped a rash of daytime break ins in West Toledo. "We saturated the area with marked and unmarked police and Wednesday, we were able to catch three burglars just in that area," Sgt. Heffernan said.
It's a trend the department and Toledoans hope continues.
"It makes you feel a little bit safer," Toledoan Kenya Cardone said. "The police are doing their job right and we can feel confident in that."
