Neighbors relieved to see dogs come off the ice

Posted: Updated:

Two dogs stuck on the ice for more than ten hours are now safely with the Lucas County Dog Warden.  The Washingtown Township Fire Department made the rescue, but it's still unclear who the owners are.

Neighbors first spotted the animals in the Maumee Bay near Cullen Park.  Many said the dogs were walking on the ice, but looked like they couldn't find a way back to shore.  A little after 6:30 Friday night, Washington Township fire crews took two hovercrafts out on water, and were able to bring both of the shivering pups on board.

Jane Graybell, who stays in the area, was one of the folks who saw the dogs on the ice this morning.  She tried her best to coax them back to dry land, but was happy to see them finally rescued Friday night.

"Hopefully this never happens again but we do see dogs out there occasionally," says Graybell.  "The rescue time could be shorter, but I'm glad that they're safe."

Washington Township fire leaders tell us they responded fast as they could, but did need time to gather the right equipment and people.  If you have any information about who the dogs belong to, give the Lucas County Dog Warden's office a call Saturday morning at 419-213-2800.
