Man trying to rescue dog falls through ice

Posted: Updated:

A man who fell through the ice trying to rescue his dog, needed rescuing from icy water himself on Saturday in Bedford, Michigan

Ed Jefferson's dog Wynne chased after a ball thrown by a friend's 6-year-old son and ended up falling through the ice of a pond. After watching Wynne struggle in the pond for a few minutes, Jefferson put on a survival wet suit and tried to save the animal, but then he fell in with his dog.

Family friend Libbey Kaczorowsky sprang into action. "At that point it wasn't a decision of who we're gonna save, it was we're gonna save them both. So I climbed out on the ice and tried to throw him a rope and he couldn't get that."

Jefferson is a veteran hunter with experience in survival situations. When the rope didn't work, he suggested his friend bring over an extension ladder.

"Got ahold of the dog and Libbey Kaczorowsky got a ladder and put a ladder across the ice," Jefferson said. "And all the emergency medical people showed up and we got out. Everybody's hunky dory"

Monroe Sheriff's Deputy Tim George was first on the scene and crawled out onto the ice to help Jefferson and Wynne to safety.

"They were able to get out there and get him some assistance before my arrival. Once I got here, I pretty much just helped to wrap it up and get him out of the ice. So, the teamwork was outstanding."

Ed and Wynne spent about 20 minutes in the water.Mr. Jefferson was treated by an ambulance for some minors injuries from his dog. Both he and his dog are safe tonight.

Deputies remind everyone to be cautious when going near the water.
