Saturday was a busy day for first responders after slick roads and a snow squall caused several multi-vehicle accidents.

At least 11 cars were hauled away from a pile-up on 23 Northbound towards Exit 5 near Blissfield, Michigan.

Injured drivers and passengers were transported to area hospitals. Thankfully, those injuries were minor.

Driver Lem Murphy said it was scary. "With the white-out, you couldn't see anything. They was going about 60-70 miles per hour and it's just liking bing bang, bang, pile-up, pile-up, pile up."

When the snow hit on Saturday afternoon, drivers on US 23 say the pavement felt like they were driving on a sheet of ice. Within minutes, a number of cars spun out of control.

Driver Cathie Francie said, "The conditions just got really bad quickly. It was snowing. The road was covered in snow. We slowed down, two seconds later we saw a man on the side of the road waving his arms for us to stop. We tried to slow down and we just ended up in the middle of the pile-up."

Just north of Blissfield in Milan, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office says at least 50 cars were involved in a pile-up. All of the reported injuries were minor.

Sgt. Geoff Kovenich of the Monroe County Sheriff's Office said, "According to witnesses out there and people involved, it was an absolute whiteout. The snow stuck to the road immediately all the way from the state line north to the county line. It was horrible. It was a quarter-inch of snow at best, but it froze as soon as it hit the road."

In Monroe, at least 30 cars crashed into each other on I-75 Southbound near Front. At least three people were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

On I-280 near Front and Starr, a 14-car pile-up shut down the southbound lanes. A number of people were taken to the hospital. The cause of that incident is under investigation, but police believe it was also weather-related.

Several of our 13abc Facebook friends shared photos of the mess.

The biggest obstacle in getting roads reopened has been the lack of available tow trucks.
