BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team lost to Ferris State Saturday night, falling to the Bulldogs by a score of 4-3 at Ewigleben Ice Arena. Sophomore Adam Berkle, freshman Brent Tate and junior Brett Mohler scored for the Falcons, while freshman goaltender Tommy Burke (4-5-2) stopped 16-of-20 shots in the loss. The Falcons were held scoreless on the power play going 0-for-3 on the night, while Ferris State went 1-for-1 with the man advantage.
The Bulldogs scored the first goal of the contest, lighting the lamp just under 11 minutes into the first period. Ferris State's Justin Demartino carried the puck into the Falcons' zone, before sending a pass to Justin Buzzeo cutting to the Falcon net. Buzzeo accepted the pass and sent a shot over the top of Burke's blocker, giving Ferris State the 1-0 lead.
Bowling Green answered back at the 16:40 mark of the first, coming off the stick of Berkle at even strength. Sophomore Dan DeSalvo intercepted a pass in the neutral zone before sending a pass to Tate at the near side of the Bulldogs' zone. Tate fired a pass to the far circle, finding Berkle between two defenders. Berkle muscled his way towards the Ferris State cage, sending a backhand shot to the glove side. Berkle's shot flew past Ferris State netminder C.J. Motte for his fifth goal of the season, tying the contest, 1-1.
With a minute left in the first period, Ferris State's Kyle Bonis netted a shorthanded breakaway goal. Bonis' goal marked his league-leading 17th tally of the season, and gave the Bulldogs the 2-1 lead at the first intermission. Ferris State netted a second-straight goal just 1:32 into the second period, coming off the stick of Cory Kane at even strength for a 3-1 Bulldog lead.
At the 8:30 mark of the frame, Bowling Green started its comeback, netting the first of two goals in a 35-second span. Berkle started the play on the first tally of the middle frame, sending a shot towards the Ferris State net. Motte handled the initial shot, but sent the rebound to Tate at the top of the crease. Tate jammed home the loose puck, beating Motte for his third goal of the season.
Just 35 seconds after Tate's goal, the Falcons started a rush into the Ferris State zone. Sumsion carried the puck down the far-side wall, drawing the Bulldog defenders to the bottom of the circle. Sumsion dropped a pass back to the trailing Mohler, who fired a wrist shot through Motte's five hole. Mohler's goal marked his fourth tally of the season, and tied the contest at 3-3.
With just over 3:30 left in the middle frame The Bulldogs pulled ahead again, netting a power-play goal on a deflection in front. Ferris State's Garret Thompson deflected a point shot from Justin Buzzeo for his 11th tally of the season, giving Ferris State the 4-3 lead heading into the third period.
Chances came at a premium in the third period, as both teams were held to under 10 shots on goal in the frame. Although the Falcons were able to outshoot the Bulldogs (6-2) in the third, Motte held strong between the pipes for the Bulldogs. The Falcons were unable to solve Motte for the remainder of the contest, giving Ferris State the 4-3 victory.
The loss drops the Falcons' overall record to 12-15-5 with a record of 9-12-3-1 in the CCHA, ranking seventh in the conference. Ferris State now sits at 15-13-4 overall, including a CCHA record of 13-11-2-1.
Berkle's first period goal snapped a 10-game goal drought, dating back to the Falcons' 5-1 win at Michigan on Jan. 8. Mohler's goal in the second period snapped a four-game goal drought, dating back to the Falcons' 4-1 win over Lake Superior on Feb. 1.
Bowling Green is back in action Friday, Feb. 22 in a home series against Northern Michigan. The puck is set to drop at 7:05 p.m. both nights, with the celebration of senior night scheduled for Saturday.
