BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team came from behind to defeat Ferris State Friday night, dropping the Bulldogs by a score of 2-1 in overtime at the Ewigleben Ice Arena. Junior Cam Wojtala and sophomore Ryan Carpenter scored for the Falcons, while freshman goaltender Tommy Burke (4-4-2) set a career-high with 36 saves on 37 Bulldog shots. Both teams were held scoreless on the power play, with Bowling Green going 0-for-4 and the Bulldogs going 0-for-3.
Ferris State dominated the Falcons in the shot department in the opening frame, outshooting Bowling Green by a 17-7 margin. The Bulldogs used that momentum to score the first goal of the contest, coming off the stick of Kyle Bonis at 16:37 of the first period.
Ferris State defenseman Simon Denis started the play, firing a shot towards the Bowling Green net. Denis' shot deflected off the stick of Bulldog Matthew Kirzinger in the slot, sending the puck to Bonis at the near side of the Falcon cage. Bonis pushed the puck past Burke for his 16th goal of the season, giving Ferris State the 1-0 lead after one period.
The Bulldogs continued to pressure the Falcons throughout the middle stanza, but Burke held strong between the pipes for the Orange and Brown, stopping all 12 Ferris State shots in the frame. Bowling Green gained some of the momentum back in the final period, outshooting the Bulldogs, 10-8, in the third.
With just under 1:30 left to play in the game, senior Bobby Shea faked out a Ferris State defender at the top of the slot before sending a shot on the Bulldog net. Shea's shot deflected off the stick of freshman Brent Tate in front, eventually finding Wojtala at the side of crease. Ferris State netminder C.J. Motte stopped Wojtala's initial shot, but couldn't hold on as Wojtala jammed away at the loose puck. Wojtala's final push squeaked through Motte for his sixth goal of the season, tying the contest at 1-1.
In overtime the Falcons completely took over the game, outshooting Ferris State, 6-0, in the bonus frame.
Just over two minutes in, sophomore Dan DeSalvo took possession of the puck at the bottom of the far circle. DeSalvo fed a pass to the point, finding sophomore Connor Kucera at the top of the Ferris State blue line. Kucera fired a shot on net, finding Carpenter for a deflection in the slot. Motte made the initial save, but kicked the rebound back to Carpenter at the top of the crease. Carpenter fired the rebound back on goal, beating Motte for his team-leading 13th goal of the season to give Bowling Green the 2-1 overtime victory.
The overtime win puts the Falcons' overall record at 12-14-4, with a 9-11-3-1 record in the CCHA. Ferris State drops to 14-13-4 overall, with a record of 12-11-2-1 in conference play.
Wojtala's game-tying tally marked his first goal since the Falcons' 3-0 win against Niagara on Dec. 29, snapping a 12-game goal drought.
The Falcons' win marked the first overtime victory of the 2012-13 season, and the first since the Orange and Brown defeated Ferris State, 4-3, in the second round of the CCHA playoffs last season.
Bowling Green is right back in action Saturday night, facing off against Ferris State in the second game of their two-game set. The puck is set to drop at 5:05 p.m., and will air live on Fox Sports Detroit.
