McNamara stepping down as Toledo council president

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, Ohio -

Toledo City Council President Joe McNamara has announced he will step down as council president.  This comes about a week after he announced he would be running for Mayor of Toledo.

The Democrat said in a statement that he enjoyed serving as council president, but said he would not allow the Mayor's race to cloud council's ability to work with the administration.

Mayor Mike Bell's administration released a statement in response to McNamara's resignation: "The legislative body has the opportunity and responsibility to choose their leadership. The administration will continue to work on behalf of our citizens with whomever council selects to serve as president, as we have since the Mayor took office."

McNamara will remain as an at-large member of council.  His resignation as president will officially happen at the council's February 19 meeting.
