Two dogs  trapped on the ice in Point Place on Friday were rescued by the Washington Township Fire Department.

A follow up to a story we first told you about last Friday. A happy ending for two dogs trapped on the ice in Maumee Bay. Both dogs are back with their owner tonight.

The dogs were out on the ice for hours before being rescued and taken to the Lucas County Dog Warden's Office.

It all started last Friday morning when people first spotted the dogs on the ice near 140th Street in Point Place which is just north of Cullen park. Neighbors frantically called various agencies trying to get help, but it took special equipment to rescue the dogs because the ice was obviously dangerous .

Volunteers from the Washington Township Fire Department took a hovercraft out that night and they were able to safely bring the dogs to shore.

The dogs have been at the Warden's office since then. They are both females, one is a black Lab mix, the other a Golden Retriever.

The owner picked up the Lab mix on Tuesday and came back to get the Retriever on Thursday. Dog Warden Julie Lyle says they rescue dogs from all kinds of situations with the same goal for all of them: to get them back to their owners.

"We get strays in every day and we hope to send stray dogs back home every day," she says. We rescue dogs from all kinds of situations, we've gotten them out of the water, we've gotten them off the ice, even out of trees, you just never know. Luckily there are people out there who help bring them in and we're here to house them and keep them safe until they can get back home."

Like anyone who has to pick up their dog at the pound, the owner was charged a boarding fee for the time the dogs were there and he also had to buy a license for the dogs.
