Humane Ohio pet food bank needs help

Posted: Updated:

For the last several years the Humane Ohio pet food bank has been helping keep animals with their families and out of shelters, and now they've come up with a creative way to increase the amount of food they bring in.

Every year the Humane Ohio pet food bank gives out tens of thousands of pounds of food and they're hoping you can make a deposit in one of their donation bins while you're doing your banking. Humane Ohio has teamed up with Huntington Bank and K-100 again this year for a special pet food drive. You can make a donation of dog or cat food at all 29 Huntington Bank branches around the Toledo area, including the ones in Bowling Green and Lambertville.

The pet food bank helps people from Lucas, Wood and Monroe counties and Humane Ohio relies on donations to keep the shelves stocked. More and more pets are being taken to shelters or abandoned and left to fend for themselves because of the tough economy. The food bank is a obviously helping prevent that from happening. Jill Borkowski is the Marketing Director for Humane Ohio,"The pet food bank gave out over 70,000 pounds of food last year alone and over 7,000 pounds in January of this year. It is a program that keeps pets from going hungry obviously, but it also keeps pets with their families and out of already overcrowded shelters. A lot of people in need also share their food with their pets so they are sacrificing their own hunger and nutrition for the sake of their animal."

The Huntington pet food drive runs through this Saturday. They are hoping to bring in about 5,000 pounds of food during the drive.
