Man accused of breaking into church

Posted: Updated:

Police say two days after 45-year-old David Lee Chesbrough was released from jail for punching a cab driver in the back of the head, he's back behind bars.

Toledo police say he broke into New Beginnings Church on South Detroit Avenue.  Church member Victor Ellis says he got a phone call from the alarm company. He thought maybe the alarm was accidentally set off by another member.

"When I got there, I saw the window busted open and I noticed the police across the street investigating another break-in. Nothing was taken, I think the alarm spooked him and so soon as the alarm went off he jumped back out the window and ran," Ellis says.

Police say Chesbrough then walked to the 3200 block of Penrose and broke into a garage. According to a police report, Chesbrough was caught with the stolen items.

"They found Mr. Chesbrough pushing a snowblower down the sidewalk which actually came from a different location, a house he broke into after he left the church," says Toledo Police Sgt. Joe Heffernan.

Police and this church goer say they're glad Chesbrough is off the streets.

"I think its a shame that someone would break into a church in order to fix their needs. I just hope this is a way he can get some help."

David Lee Chesbrough faces numerous charges including breaking and entering and assault.
