A cat was run over and left for dead in Holland, but thanks to the quick thinking of three teenagers, the tabby is alive tonight and recovering from a life saving surgery. We do want to warn you the pictures of Spirit the cat may be upsetting to some of you.
It all started with the teenagers, but there are a lot of Good Samaritans working to save Spirit including a local veterinarian and a rescue group.
Spirit was hit Monday night and the driver didn't stop. A teenage girl and her boyfriend who watched it happen, scooped the cat up out of the street, went and got the girl's older sister and then raced the injured cat to the vet.
The cat's eyes were severely injured and her jaw was broken. She underwent major surgery Wednesday at St. Francis Veterinary Hospital in Sylvania. She was in surgery for several hours. During surgery, Dr. Dillon had to remove one of her eyes and repair her jaw, but he says she is doing as well as can be expected.
Planned Pethood has taken her into their rescue program. That means the rescue group will pay for her surgery which is expected to cost about $2,500.00.
Conner Richberg is one of the teens who rescued Spirit. She collected money Wednesday at Springfield High School to get the fund started to pay for the surgery, "I am very hopeful that Spirit makes a full recovery. I know nothing is a guarantee, but I am really hopeful that she gets a good home because everyone deserves a chance right?"
Nikki Morey is the Executive Director of Planned Pethood,"She's not going to be up for adoption for awhile. She will have to get used to being blind and she'll need a lot of tender, loving care while she learns to eat with the broken jaw. She likely has hematomas all over her body, so she'll be sore and not feeling very well."
Conner has already raised $130 and she's taking her collection can back to school Thursday.
After seeing this story, a 13abc viewer agreed to foster Spirit.
People who are interested in donating towards Spirit's medical costs can donate online at www.plannedpethood.org or by sending a check made out to Planned Pethood to PO Box 350908, Toledo OH 43635. Please note "Spirit" somewhere on the online form or in the memo of the check.
People who are interested in fostering or adopting from Planned Pethood can call 419-826-3499 for more information.
