Snow Emergencies declared - 13abc.com Toledo (OH) News, Weather and Sports

Slick conditions make driving treacherous

Posted: Updated:

For many motorists, it was a slow slog to work on Friday.  For others, it was a day to stay home.

More than 200 schools in Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan were delayed or closed thanks to winter weather.  A burst of snow mixed with freezing rain and sleet hit just before rush hour Friday morning.  The Sylvania school system was the first to close shortly after 6:30am followed by dozens of other systems including Toledo Public Schools.

Drivers responded by slowing well below posted speeds as snow plow operators attacked roadways and dropped salt along area streets.

As of 8:00am today Putnam, Sandusky, and Seneca Counties issued a level 1 snow emergencies meaning conditions are hazardous.  Despite the slick conditions, the number of accidents was relatively low.  Police responded to an accident involving three vehicles shortly after 8:00am at South Byrne and Marine.  Details were sketchy.

13abc Meteorologist Bill Spencer says the Toledo area received about an inch and a half of the snow and sleet mixture.  Precipitation will turn into freezing drizzle at mid-day and temperatures are expected to slowly rise above freezing later in the day.

13abc.com will update the latest weather and traffic conditions throughout the day.  A winter weather advisory posted by the National Weather Service expires at Noon on Friday.
