ODOT crews prepare for winter storm

Posted: Updated:

ODOT crews are already preparing for slick weather heading our way.  But the possibility of rain before the snow and ice is making it harder to treat the roads.

When crews get the word snow is on the way, they usually pre-treat the roads with a  special brine solution.  Because we could get rain first, they're afraid that mix could wash off the road.
The good news is that salt is already on the roads which will help keep them clear.  And the closer temperatures stay to the freezing mark, the better the salt will work.

In addition to having crews on stand by, ODOT leaders are double checking their gear and work vehicles.   They remind drivers to take it slow when the weather starts getting slippery.

"At this point, what we're doing is making sure we have the crews available," says Theresa Pollick, with the Ohio Department of Transportation District 2.  "We're looking at the timing of the system and looking at what we have on the roadway already."

ODOT leaders say they won't be able to do anything until they get a better idea of exactly what's coming our way.  If we do get that ice and snow, workers are prepared to work 12-hour shifts to keep roads clear and keep traffic moving.

We often report stories on the Ohio State Highway Patrol's K-9 unit. The dogs help Troopers find huge quantities of illegal drugs in our region every year. But between the big hits is a lot of hard work,
Ride along as an elite group of four legged crime fighters and their handlers take drugs off Northwest Ohio roads.
