WILMORE - Lourdes wrapped up its four-game series against Asbury on Saturday afternoon, splitting a doubleheader against the Eagles at Cecil Zweifel Field in Wilmore, Ky. Asbury won the opener 10-9 before the Gray Wolves took the nightcap 16-3.
"We led in every game of the series this weekend," head coach Andy Ham said after the games. "We finally figured out how to win one in the finale. Hopefully we can carry that momentum with us into our spring trip."
Lourdes scored first in the opener as Cole Fitzgerald (Rome, N.Y./Centerville [Ohio] H.S.) scored John Crooks (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills H.S.) on a sacrifice fly for an unearned run. Asbury answered in the bottom of the first with a run of its own before a Cody Berg (Garrettsville, Ohio/James A. Garfield H.S.) RBI groundout in the second put the Gray Wolves on top again.
After the Eagles took a 3-2 lead after two, Lourdes scored three times in the third. Ryan Kovar (Cleveland, Ohio/Benedictine H.S.) doubled home two runs and Berg plated another on a sacrifice fly to make it 5-3. A Crooks home run with one out in the fourth to right field, his second round-tripper of the season, made it 6-3 Lourdes before Asbury answered with one in the bottom of the inning.
The Gray Wolves increased the lead to 7-4 in the fifth before Asbury scored five times in the bottom of the fifth, all after a two-out error, and took a 9-7 lead into the seventh. Lourdes battled back to tie the game. Sam Jerome (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton H.S.) plated the first run with a ground out and Andy Kefalos (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton H.S.) delivered the game-tying RBI single.
Asbury won the game in the bottom of the seventh though as Jared Hahn's one-out single to right scored Brandon Smith with the winning run.
Crooks had two hits to lead Lourdes seven-hit attack in the game while Kovar and Berg each drove home two runs.
Logan Howard earned the win (1-4) for Asbury, despite allowing three unearned runs in three innings of relief, while Danny Brodbeck (Akron, Ohio/Springfield H.S.) suffered the loss after coming on in relief for the Gray Wolves.
In the nightcap Lourdes took advantage of 15 Asbury walks and exploded for eight runs in the seventh inning to pick up the win in the series finale.
A two-out Redies double in the first scored Crooks in the opening inning, who also doubled with one out. Lourdes added three more runs in the fourth, all unearned. Fitzgerald added a RBI single in the fifth and the Gray Wolves had a 5-0 lead.
Drew Lepiarz (Toledo, Ohio/Start HS.), making his season debut, took a shutout into the fifth before surrendering a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning, as the Eagles cut Lourdes lead to 5-1. The Gray Wolves took advantage of three walks and two wild pitches in the sixth to score three times without a hit, extending the lead.
Asbury scored two in the sixth before Lourdes tallied eight runs in the seventh on just one hit. The Gray Wolves drew eight walks, had a hit batter, and were the recipient of a balk while sending 13 batters to the plate.
Redies had three RBI for the Gray Wolves in game two while he and Fitzgerald each had two hits.
