Perry’s Monument featured on US coin

Posted: Updated:

It's a Lake Erie historical treasure, and one of the tallest monuments in the country is being honored in money!

Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial recognizes those who fought in the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812. It also honors the longstanding peace among the United States, Britain and Canada.

Now the site will be featured on a commemorative quarter. It's part of the US Mint's "America the Beautiful" series.

The statue of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, with the peace memorial in the distance, is featured on the new coin. On the top is an inscription reading "Perry's Victory."

The quarter is the second in a series of five being released this year. To celebrate the coin's release, the public is invited to a special launch ceremony at the monument.

The event takes place April 20 at 11:30 a.m. Organizers say they plan to have plenty of the special coins on hand, and every school-aged child will receive a Perry quarter at the event.
