Who's making the grade? Area districts weigh in on report cards

Posted: Updated:

The Ohio Department of Education grades school districts in the state each year.  Dr. Jerome Pecko has seen better report cards.

"We're always disappointed until we reach a rating of excellent as a school district," he told 13abc.

Last year, Toledo Public Schools were given a Continued Improvement designation by the state.  This year, the district dropped to Academic Watch.

Pecko says because TPS didn't improve in the "value added" category, the district automatically falls.  He also points to the transformational plan.

"We did turn the district upside down a year ago and this is the one that reflects that year," he said.  "We anticipated the drop."

The Ohio Department of Education found that many of its schools are making steady gains.  Locally, districts like Findlay and Oregon rated Effective.

Wauseon, Ottawa Hills and Bowling Green are a few in the area with Excellent designations.

Taking home the highest honors, Springfield, Anthony Wayne and Perrysburg, just to name a few, are getting Excellent with Distinction.

"We've made pretty steady progress about the last 7 to 8 years," Brent Welker, Superintendent of Eastwood schools said.  "We're just pleased with where we stand right now."

Eastwood Local Schools also rated Excellent with Distinction.  Welker attributes it to the hard work of staff and students.

"Our teachers put in a tremendous amount of time and our kids are committed,"  he said.  "We've got a good solid community that gets behind education."

Beginning next year, the state will switch over and rate schools with an A-F grade.  The new systems will take a broader look at school effectiveness.
