Swimming Heads to MAC Championships

Posted: Updated:

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Bowling Green State University swim team takes on the MAC this week in the 2013 Mid-American Conference Championships, hosted by the University of Buffalo.

The Falcons, who last competed in early February, closed the regular season with back-to-back wins over Akron and Youngstown state. Bowling Green won 13 of 14 events against the Zips, earning its first MAC win of the season.

The Falcons will look to improve upon an eighth-place finish at last year's MAC Championships, highlighted by two second-place finishes from Alexis Kain.

"It will be a very fast meet," said head coach Petra Martin. "The whole conference is looking stronger than ever, so we are keeping things simple and will be attacking things one event at a time. We are excited and ready to go."

Bowling Green heads to Buffalo with a 7-7 overall record (1-4 MAC). The regular season was highlighted by impressive showings at the Northwestern TYR Invitational and at home against Michigan State and Buffalo. At the TYR Invite, BGSU earned 644 points and won six races against Big Ten challengers Illinois and Northwestern to finish third of six teams. Then, on Senior Day, the Falcons outpaced the Spartans and Bulls in the swimming events at BGSU's Cooper Pool.

In January, the Falcons showed up at No. 47 in CollegeSwimming.com's list of the Top 50 women's swim teams in the nation - the third MAC team on the list behind Toledo (No. 42) and Miami (No. 44).

Transfer Joëlle Scheps, originally from the Netherlands, has made a splash in her first season as a Falcon. So far this year, Scheps has already recorded six top-ten times in BGSU history, including top-three times in the 200 freestyle and 400 IM.

The Falcons have relied on a strong senior class throughout the year, including BGSU record holders Alexis Kain (100- and 200 breaststroke) and Alexa Harris (200 backstroke). Emily Bennet has been a force in the 50- and 100 freestyle, earning MAC Swimmer of the Week honors for the week of Oct. 17.

Junior Brittany Szekely is having her finest season yet, swimming career-best times in the 50- and 100 freestyle at the U.S. Winter National Championships in December. At that meet, Szekely broke the school record in the 100 free (50.31) and posted the second-fastest time in BGSU history in the 50 free (23.14).

Freshmen Jordan Bullock and Daniela Carrillo have made immediate contributions for the Falcons, with Bullock swimming the fastest times in the 100- and 200 butterfly for the team this year. Carrillo's been outstanding in the breaststroke, notching top-five all-time marks in the 100- and 200 breast for BGSU.

In MAC competition, the Falcons suffered losses to Miami, Ball State, Eastern Michigan and Buffalo before getting the win against Akron on Feb. 1.
