Falcons Prepare For Buccaneer Challenge

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Bowling Green State University softball team will participate in its third tournament of the 2013 season this weekend, as they head to Johnson City, Tenn. for the Buccaneer Challenge. The Falcons (3-2) will take on Morehead State and East Tennessee State this weekend, taking on both teams on two separate days  in a four-game span. The Falcons own a career record of 3-0-1 against Morehead State, most recently defeating the Eagles by a score of 6-3 at the Hilltopper Classic last season (2/26/12). Bowling Green's other opponent, East Tennessee State, is the host for the Buccaneer Challenge. This season marks the first career meeting between the Falcons and the Buccaneers.

Last Weekend

The Bowling Green State University softball team split the first day of the Phyllis Rafter Invitational Saturday evening, pushing the Falcons' overall record to 2-1 on the young season. Bowling Green started the day with a win over Youngstown State, beating the Penguins by a score of 1-0. The Falcons suffered their first loss of the 2013 season in game two, falling to host Kennesaw State, 5-0.

The Falcons earned another split on the second day of the Phyillis Rafter Memorial Tournament, putting the Falcons' overall record at 3-2. The Orange and Brown fell to Jacksonville State in their first action of the day, losing to the Gamecocks by a score of 12-7. Bowling Green rebounded with a win over Campbell University in game two, defeating the Camels, 4-3.


This past weekend in Kennesaw, Ga. marked the first home runs of the season for Bowling Green, as junior Katie Yoho and seniors Andrea Arney and Paige Berger hit their first homers of the season. Yoho and Arney hit home runs in the Falcons' 12-7 loss to Jacksonville State, while Berger hit a game-winning homer in a 4-3 victory over Campbell. Yoho and Arney both hit double-digit home runs last season, while Berger was held to seven. Berger now has 31 career home runs as a Falcon, ranking second on the all-time list behind Hayley Wiemer (2006-09).

Other Firsts

Freshman Maris Shook collected her first hit as a Falcon on Sunday, collecting a double in the loss to Jacksonville State. Shook's hit also marked her first career RBI, and the first double for Bowling Green this season.


Stolen Bases

Hannah Fulk, Paige Berger and Katie Yoho are all perfect on the base paths this season, going 3-for-3, 2-for-2 and 1-for-1, respectively. Berger led all Falcons with 11 stolen bases last season, going 11-for-11 on the year. Berger is also tied for the team lead (Yoho) with seven total bases this season.



Junior Katie Yoho currently ranks first on the Falcons with four RBI and a .467 slugging percentage. Yoho finished with 35 RBI last season, ranking second on Bowling Green. Yoho also ranked second on the Falcons last season with a .559 slugging percentage.


Close Finishes

The Falcons currently sit at 3-2 in the young season, with all of their wins coming in one-run games. Bowling Green finished with a 1-0 win against George Washington in the first week of the season, before earning a 1-0 win against Youngstown State and a 4-3 win against Campbell.
