Cherry Street Mission get OK to buy Macomber, concert raises money

Posted: Updated:

The Owens Community College Concert Band held a Winter Pops Concert to benefit Cherry Street Mission Ministries on Sunday. And the organization has plans for the funds raised.

Dan Rogers, president and CEO of Cherry Street Mission Ministries, said they now have the official OK to buy the vacant Macomber High School.

"I'm happy to report that all engineering reports are in and our Board of Directors have approved the purchase of the Macomber High School," Rogers said.

Right now, their services are spread out over 12 facilities in nine different neighborhoods.

Moving to the new, much bigger building will change that.

"So what this project does is that it takes that entire organization and puts it under one roof," Rogers said.

Fred Dais is the director of the Concert Band. He and his wife have been volunteering at the mission for almost 30 years.

"It was just last summer when the idea was hatched that we could do a partnering situation and have this benefit concert today," Dais said.

The concert was free for those attending, but they were asked to make a donation to the Cherry Street Mission.

Carol Crowley attends most of the bands concerts and was happy to make a donation.

"Any food donation or any kind of donation you make will help," Crowley said.

With the project expected to take nearly five years and a lot of money, Rogers said events like this might seem small, but make a big difference.
