Multi-million dollar projects are underway along busy Monroe County roadways. The first is on US 23 just over the Michigan border. That project will shift northbound traffic into one of the southbound lanes for several miles. The other project is along Telegraph Road in a busy commercial area. Both will mean a few extra minutes in your car, but in the long run your drive will be a lot smoother.
It's easy to see why the stretch of US 23 is being torn up. Construction is about to start in the Northbound lanes between the Sterns Road and US-223 exits. Jeff Bigelow is a Resident Engineer with HNTB Corporation,"It's a full reconstruction, so there will be brand new concrete pavement going in as well as a guardrail upgrade. We're also putting a double roundabout in at the US 223 interchange, so there will be a lot of work going on there through most of the summer as well."
Between Sterns and US 223 northbound traffic will shift into one of the southbound lanes, meaning there will only be one lane of traffic in each direction. That will happen sometime this weekend or early next week, "We expect during the peak driving hours in the morning and in the evening there will be some back-ups because of the lane closures, but if people are polite and allow each other to merge, it should not be too bad."
A major Telegraph Road project started on Monday as well. Crews are starting to work on the stretch between Stewart and Hurd Roads, "We'll be doing some widening and storm sewer work in that area to make it 5 lanes through the bulk of that area. There are a lot of businesses in this stretch of Telegraph and we encourage everyone to continue to support them during this construction. We will be maintaining access to all of them during this construction."
Most of the work for the US 23 project will be done during the day. It's slated to be finished in June. The work has a price tag of 12 million and that includes the roundabout at US 223. Crews will then do some patch work in the southbound lanes between 223 and Sterns Road. The Telegraph Road project will be finished this fall with a price tag of about 8 million.
