ODOT workers back to work after fatal I-75 crash

TOLEDO, Ohio -

Police suspect Ken Harder of Temperance was texting and driving before he ran into an ODOT truck parked on the side of I-75 near Bancroft on Monday.

Harder died. ODOT worker Mary Rich was hit on the arm and went to the hospital.  She was released Monday night.

Rich and one other ODOT worker were standing outside the dump truck on the side of the highway picking up a tarp when the crash happened.

On Tuesday both ODOT workers returned to work.

"It was a miracle that they were able to survive this accident," says ODOT District 2 spokesperson Theresa Pollick. "In this case both of our workers were outside of the vehicle while this happened. One was on one side of the truck, the other on the other side. Unfortunately, like they said, it was a shock. It happened in seconds. Our workers are so lucky to have the chance to go home to their families last night. Unfortunately that wasn't the circumstance for another driver."

Pollick says ODOT workers have a dangerous job.

"It's something that we take into consideration every day when we go out there on the highway. That's why we wear vests. That's why we have our flashers on," says Pollick.

She's warning drivers to pay attention.

"It's only the beginning of the construction season. In fact, it hasn't really started," says Pollick. "So we're going to see more orange barrels pop up, more work zones pop up and we just want to remind everybody to just pay attention to what's going on ahead of you because it could save their life and the life of a worker."
