Emergency alerts available to Lenawee Co. residents

When an emergency happens in your part of Lenawee County, you can be the first to hear about it -- and know exactly what to do.

It's all thanks to a new addition to an alert program that's already in place.

The Code Red system is run by a company in Florida.

Those in Lenawee County have been able to sign up for severe weather alerts since 2011.

Now, Code Red will include emergencies issued from the 911 dispatch center, and the messages can be isolated to a certain area.

That means, when the standoff happened in Adrian two weeks ago, some who live near Adrian College would have been told to evacuate.

Another example would have been the potentially hazardous materials release inside the Dairy Farmers of America plant.

It also happened last month, and those within one-tenth of a mile were temporarily told to shelter in place.

Now, the EMA can send word faster and directly through this automated system.
