Weather gives maple syrup production a boost

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, Ohio -

Maple syrup is certainly the flavor of the season, but before that candy or syrup can be made it has to come from maple trees and syrup farmers from around the state are very excited about the prospect of this season.

Like any type of gardening or farming, weather plays a huge role and so far the weather is playing nice more than half way through the season. Lots of frigid nights with above freezing afternoon temperatures gets the sap flowing.

Heavy snow or rain is a huge bonus. While this season may end up with average production, it is significantly better than last year when temperatures were too warm and the snow was nearly non existent. It takes about 4 to 8 trees, or about 40 gallons of sap, to make just 1 gallon of sweet maple syrup.
