Fire Station No. 3, 21st Century meets history

Posted: Updated:

The red terracotta roof tiles, the sand-colored stone, the archways and the original wooden door will all remain after the remodel of Fire Station No. 3 at the corner of Bush and Erie.

"The thing that will make this station unique is that we're using an old station that was built in 1927," said Lt. Matt Hertzfeld, public information officer of the Toledo Police Department. "We're able to recycle that into the 21 century."

Drawings released by the city show what Toledo's oldest fire station will look like after a 1.7 million dollar facelift.

Merging history with innovation is something Lt. Hertzfeld said was key when coming up with the new design.

"So, you'll be able to come from the old into the new. What's really great, I think, is that we're keeping this old archway," Lt. Hertzfeld said. "This is really a symbol of three."

The equipment will be parked in the new addition to the station.

In order to expand, the city spent $16,000 to purchase a portion of the parking lot next to the station.

"The old station over here will be living corridors," he said. "We'll have a kitchen and those types of things."

But, it's not just history that's being preserved. Firefighters said this station is important for other reasons.

"Last year this station responded to over 4,000 of those 55,000 incidents," Lt. Hertzfeld said. "So, it will have an impact on the neighborhood. It will have an impact on the department."

One unique part of the old station that will remain is the tower. In the stations early years it was used to dry out the fire hoses. The youngest firefighter would have to climb the tower, pull the hose up and hang it out to dry.

Lt. Hertzfeld said they hope to start the renovation and restoration within the next few months or even weeks.

We often report stories on the Ohio State Highway Patrol's K-9 unit. The dogs help Troopers find huge quantities of illegal drugs in our region every year. But between the big hits is a lot of hard work,
