Helping hands box food for those in need

Posted: Updated:

Thousands of boxes of food are heading out to the hungry.

March is National Social Worker month and on Saturday some Toledo social workers and volunteers teamed up to lend a helping hand to the Toledo Seagate Food Bank.

"We have too many hungry people in our community." said Dean Sparks, Executive Director of Lucas County Children Services.

It's something Lucas County Children Services workers see all to often. That's why the 50 volunteers came out to pack food boxes for seniors.

"So, we decided that every year we get together during Social Worker month. We come and pack food at the Seagate Food Bank to do what we can to help Lucas County," Sparks said.

As a box moves down the line cereal, juice, canned vegetables and meats are packed up.

Social workers said helping feed seniors will help the well-being of children.

"We also know that if we can help resolve hunger problems that we're going to make life better for kids and that's our mission," Sparks said. "A lot of seniors are caring for kids."

The 5,000 kits will be given to seniors on the food program in April.
