LAKE WALES, FLA. - Lourdes wrapped up its spring trip on Saturday morning with a 5-2 victory over Thomas (Ga.) in the fourth place game of the Warner Invitational held in Lake Wales, Fla.
The Night Hawks struck first with a run in the top of the first inning before Lourdes took the lead for good in the second. Marty Ramirez (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) led off the inning with a single and Garrett Jex (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green H.S.) followed with a bunt hit. A one out walk to Cody Berg (Garrettsville, Ohio/James A. Garfield H.S.) loaded the bases before John Crooks (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills H.S.) delivered the big blow, a three-run triple.
A two-out balk in the bottom of the third plated Josh Redies (Saline, Mich./.Saline H.S.) while a Cole Fitzgerald (Rome, N.Y/Centerville [Ohio] H.S.) single scored Mike Calloway (Detroit, Mich./Cass Tech H.S.) with the fifth run in the fourth inning.
Thomas made it 5-2 in the sixth with a single run but Matt Olsavsky (Waterville, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) came on in the seventh to earn the save for Lourdes.
Crooks and Jex both had two hits for the Gray Wolves as Lourdes tallied eight safeties in the contest.
Kyle Vandecaveye (Ida, Mich./Ida H.S.) started and went the first six innings for the win (1-1). The sophomore allowed two runs on five hits while striking out four. Joey Vitello suffered the loss for Thomas (13-10), giving up three runs and four hits in two innings of action.
Lourdes (6-9) will return home to open the home slate on Wednesday afternoon as the Gray Wolves host Goshen. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m. at Mercy Field.
