Wauseon school district approves $370K in cuts

Posted: Updated:

The Wauseon Board of Education has approved Superintendent Larry Brown's recommendations concerning budget cuts.

The decision was made as part of the regularly scheduled Board of Education meeting on Monday night.

Among reductions and restructuring, three teaching jobs will be eliminated and a full-time position will be reduced to part-time.

A physical education teaching position elimination will be made possible by allowing students that complete interscholastic athlete programs, to waive their physical education requirements. Restructuring will allow a middle school technology teacher elimination and a lower number of second graders enrolled will make it possible to eliminate the third grade teaching position. A full-time French teacher will be going part-time.

"Every job is important to community members and we realize that," Superintendent Larry Brown said,  "But we try to do whatever we can creatively with contracts and working with contracts to try to minimize the reduction in jobs itself."

Other positions will be restructured.  The district will save a  total of $370,000 under the plan.

Parents and employees at the meeting felt the cuts are reasonable.

"I'm very confident that the school is going to do what is best, Michelle Myers, a 10-year school bus driver for the district said,  "They have always been upfront as far as what they want for the kids and for the community."

"The school district has always supported the community and the kids have always been the first priority, Karen Rees, a parent of two children in the district said.

Superintendent Brown says they will continue to look at ways to save money for the Wauseon school district. That will include evaluating each job as it becomes vacant from retirement or resignation. They will also look into another levy in the future to increase revenue.
