Toledo, Ohio — The Toledo Zoo's new Australia-themed exhibit, Wild Walkabout, presented by Mercy, is slated to open on Friday, May 24. It takes visitors on an adventure that explores the natural wonders from the Land Down Under.

According to the Toledo Zoo, new animals are arriving weekly, from dingoes and death adders to lionfish and laughing kookaburras. More animals are hatching or being born on-site for the new exhibit, like the kiwi chick that hatched on Jan. 12.

One of the Zoo's key projects this winter has been developing dynamic new exhibits for visitors to enjoy these animals. The space formerly used for the Backyard Birds exhibit, for example, is being updated to host a pair of cassowaries: primitive, aggressive birds known for attacking feet-first and using their dagger-like center claws to maim their victims.

A new exhibit near the Zoo's Aviary will feature a walk-through area that brings visitors up close and personal with wallabies, while renovations to the Reptile House are making way for a huge saltwater crocodile coming to Toledo through the support of Block Communications, Inc.

Additional projects include a Great Barrier Reef exhibit in the Museum of Science, showcasing some of Australia's dramatic aquatic species; Australia-themed Keeper Tales shows in Nature's Neighborhood; and exclusive behind-the-scenes Wild Walkabout tours.

As the May 24 – 26 Opening Weekend Celebration, sponsored by BP-Husky Refining LLC, approaches, updates will be shared at toledozoo.org/walkabout.
