New leader heading to local Humane Society

Posted: Updated:

As we first told you last month the Toledo Area Humane Society will have a new man at the helm next week. The shelter has been without an Executive Director since last fall. After an extensive national search, Gary Willoughby has been hired from a shelter in South Carolina.

Adoption numbers are way up and they obviously want to keep that momentum going. Shelter leaders are confident that Willoughby is the right man to help them do that. He's worked in the non-profit sector for more than a decade, most recently at an animal shelter in South Carolina,

The staff is excited about the man who will help write the latest chapter in the Humane Society's more than 125 year history. Thousands of animals end up at the shelter every year. About 4 thousand of them found a forever home last year after a stay at the Toledo Area Humane Society.

Dr Debbie Johnson is the Director of Operations, "Our length of stay is way down. We're really focused on that, it's a very important number in the shelter world. Our dogs don't stay long... they come in and usually find a home relatively quickly and our average cat stay here is less than 30 days. That's terrific."

And they want to keep building on success stories like that. They believe they've found the man who will help them do that, "Gary Willoughby is coming from Aiken, South Carolina where he was the Executive Director of the SPCA shelter. He has a business background so he brings a lot to the table. It's exciting to have a new leader and with all the experience he brings to the table, he'll help us move forward quickly and continue to add programs and continue to find out what the community needs and offer it to them."

One of the challenges they face at the Humane Society is an outdated building, "We're growing out of the building . Gary comes with experience of running a capital campaign and he was part of the effort to build a new shelter in South Carolina, so I am sure it will be on his to-do list."

Dog adoptions at the humane society were up 35% in 2012 compared to 2011 and cat adoptions were up almost 100% in 2012. Willoughby's first day on the job is next Wednesday.
