Local Jesuits proud of Pope Francis' roots

Posted: Updated:

It was a day of celebration for millions of Catholics around the world.  But for one local high school, pope Francis is a special pick, one they've never seen before.

"it's a very exciting time for us and a time we feel very blessed to be represented with the Papacy," says Rev. Thomas Doyle with St. John's Jesuit High School.

Pope Francis is the first from the Jesuit order, a group dating back to the 16th century.  They're known their missionary work and scholastic achievement, characteristics St. John Jesuit High School workers are proud to share with the new leader.

"We're really excited," says Doyle.  "He's going to be a man of simplicity and holiness that is going to be leading the church. We're really looking forward to seeing what he's going to do with us."

Toledo Catholics look forward to the changes Pope Francis can bring.  They're proud of their religious traditions, and hope a new leader will bring new life and strength to their church.

"In this world, there are many storms, many trials, there's all kind of things," says Bishop Leonard Blair with the Catholic Diocese of Toledo.  "We pray that the Pope will have the grace and strength to fulfill his ministry."
