2 Toledo firefighters suspended for misconduct

Posted: Updated:

Two Toledo firefighters are accused of using a Life Squad as a party shuttle while on duty.

Toledo fire officials say two paramedics misused city equipment and have handed down suspensions to be served at a later date.

The incident dates back to January. An internal investigation shows that Joseph Zuber and Bradon Walton acted out of conduct.

The chief says they shuttled three women in a Life Squad back and forth from Station Five on Ontario Street to a party at a downtown bar less than a quarter of a mile away.

The report also states the women posed for pictures in a fire truck. One woman even went down the station's fire pole.

This is the first offense for both of the men, and the chief says both regret their actions.

"At the time, they didn't feel it was any big deal," says Chief Luis Santiago. "After reviewing it with them and discussing with them some of the perceptions and things that could've happened, they now understand that it was a mistake in judgment."

The department has issued a 16-hour suspension for Zuber and an 8-hour suspension for Walton.

The chief calls their actions inappropriate but says there was no compromise in response time.

These latest suspensions come after two other members of Station Five were charged in unrelated off-duty traffic incidents. So far, one has pleaded guilty to reckless operation of a vehicle.
