A public transportation levy is on the ballot in Perrysburg in May and supporters of that levy are trying to convince voters to say yes when they head to the polls.
Volunteers from the "Go Perrysburg" campaign were manning the phones on Sunday, reaching out to voters and asking them to bring back public transportation to the city.
Perrysburg voters decided to break their ties with TARTA last March, but failed to approve a levy to fund an alternative method of public transportation.
That's left some seniors and disabled people with few options for getting around.
Gil Lutz said is bling and depends on public transportation. "I'm 79 and when public transportation went from Perrysburg, I know have the least amount of mobility and independence that I have in my entire life, and I'm blind."
A group called Go Perrysburg was formed to find an alternative service. The City stepped in to provide a dial-a-ride service until a levy was passed, but Perrysburg voters said no to that levy in November. Go Perrysburg is hoping that voters will see the need for public transit this time around.
Go Perrysburg chairman Jack Hoeflinger promised, "It's going to be cost-effective. It will be completely redesigned. It'll be done on a kind of dial-a-ride service, if you will or call-a-ride service."
Hoefliger says without fixed routes, it will keep the cost down and be better utilized.
Go Perrysburg made calls for four hours on Sunday, seeking to find out how much support they have in the community and to educate voters about the need for public transportation.
The group says the levy will cost the owner of a $200,000 home $4 a month. Riders will pay a dollar to get a ride anywhere within Perrysburg. It will also provide drop-off locations to catch a TARTA bus outside of Perrysburg.
Go Perrysburg will be going door to door to gather support for the levy next week. Callers say they got a positive response on Sunday.
