Sylvania Twp. man tweeted before shootout with police

Posted: Updated:

A Sylvania Township man is dead.

22-year-old Kevin Bailey was shot and killed in a shootout with Cleveland-area police on Sunday night.

Authorities say around 9:45 p.m. Bailey fled a police stop in Solon, crashed his vehicle a quarter mile away after driving over a curb, and started shooting at approaching police officers before officers could get out of their squad cars.

One officer took rounds to both the chest and left arm, but was wearing a bullet proof vest.

Solon police officers then shot and killed Bailey.

Both officers were treated at a hospital and released.

According to Bailey's Twitter account, two hours before the shootout with police he tweeted a message to a woman which said, "I always loved you goodbye."

Toledo Municipal Court records show that Bailey was due to appear for trial at the end of the month for several minor traffic violations, as well as charges of drug abuse, possession of a controlled substance, and obstructing official business.

A week ago a Toledo Municipal Court judge also issued a bench warrant for Bailey for several hundred dollars in probation fees that he owed stemming from a conviction in January for improperly transporting a loaded handgun in a motor vehicle.

According to a spokesperson for Toledo Public Schools, Bailey did not graduate from TPS. However, records show at one point Bailey went to Bowsher High School. Records list him as "inactive" in April of 2008.

A neighbor at Bailey's Sylvania Township home on Pin Oak Drive didn't want to speak on camera, but she says she's known the family for years. She is shocked by Bailey's shootout with police, calling it, "out of character. It's not like him."

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is handling the case. The two officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave while the incident is under review.

The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner is handling Bailey's autopsy.
