Jerusalem Township Fire Chief Harold Stanton has been suspended by township trustees. Jerusalem Township Trustee Joe Kiss confirmed the suspension to 13abc.

Jerusalem Township trustees have voted 3-0 to fire Fire Chief Harold Stanton.

Stanton was suspended earlier in the month after he allegedly allowed a former firefighter to take part in emergency calls. Trustees say that created a safety risk.

Stanton's attorney tells 13abc they plan to appeal the decision Wednesday.

The trustees declined to comment, telling 13abc they were advised not to talk to the media.

The decision to fire Stanton upset the crowd that showed up to watch the vote. It's a vote which some called a personal vendetta.

"Oh my God!" yelled one woman.

One man even had to be restrained after Jerusalem Township trustees voted 3-0 to fire Fire Chief Harold Stanton.

Trustees said Stanton allowed a former firefighter to take part in emergency calls which created a safety risk and liability.

Stanton's attorney Kevin Greenfield says he plans to appeal the decision on Wednesday and possibly sue the township as well.

Greenfield calls this a political issue, not a liability issue.

"The person that they allege that was unauthorized at the scene is the brother of a former trustee who there's a lot of animosity between the trustees presently sitting or some of them and this former trustee," says Greenfield. "My client happens to know this person. This is typical small town politics."

"I think they're wrong in this firing of Chief Stanton," says 68-year-old Richard Wilson who is a retired firefighter in Jerusalem Township. "We're bringing the township back to be the joke of Northwest Ohio with all the infighting and stuff."

"It was completely unjust," says Robert Bonnough who is a volunteer firefighter in the department which is approximately 30 firefighters strong. "It was a personal vendetta that had nothing to do with Chief Stanton. We are definitely losing a huge asset, not just to the fire department, but the entire township is losing a huge asset."

Jerusalem Township Trustees tell 13abc they've been advised by their attorneys not to talk to the media.
