Monday's 1.3" in Toledo most significant spring snow since 2008

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, Ohio -

With the late-March sun angle, the melting has been rapid, but yesterday's spring snow was Toledo's most significant spring accumulation in five years.

Officially, the Toledo Express Airport received 1.3" of snow on Monday.

The last time Toledo had that much (or more) snow in Spring was on March 27-28, 2008, when 3.1" fell.

A few other notable spring snows are the following:

0.5" on April 6, 2009

0.1" on March 29, 2009

On the late end of the spectrum, we had a trace (unmeasurable amount) of snow on April 18, 2011, and also on April 13 of 2008.

This afternoon and evening, many areas are receiving graupel showers.

Graupel can be described as a spongy sleet / snow hybrid.

It isn't pure sleet, and some people say it resembles "Dippin' Dots."

Others call it "soft hail", although it is formed from a process very different from true hail.
