Mayor Bell in Germany to promote Toledo

Posted: Updated:

Toledo Mayor Mike Bell and a delegation from Toledo are in Germany for massive trade show. The mayor hopes to encourage foreign investment in Northwest Ohio.

Five Ohio cities will be in Germany for the show, promoting their towns to businesses. Only two mayors will make the trip and that could give Toledo a huge advantage.

Mayor Bell believes a global economy demands a global presence and that meeting foreign companies on their soil shows respect and interest.

Deputy Mayor Paul Syring sees international travel and trade as the cost of doing business in the modern world.

Toledo-built Jeeps are exported all around the world, and if Toledo can entice foreign companies to build plants here, Congressman Bob Latta says that production and sales cycle will continue.

"We've got to sell our products overseas and compete around the world."

Mayoral candidate Joe McNamara disagrees. "How does this create jobs?" he charges that the mayor is simply globetrotting on the public's dime and that these sort of trips should be left to business development groups.

But business development leaders say the presence of the mayor can make a big difference.

"Mayors generally have great respect overseas.  People are interested in what they do politically and economically."

The mayor has been in Germany since Saturday and 13abc is there with him. We'll have reports on what he's doing to attract business to our region starting Wednesday.
