Police investigating break-ins

Posted: Updated:

Chris Oakes is new to the Springfield Twp. area, but he likes the Shadow Valley neighborhood.   The only crime he'd heard about was someone stealing Girl Scout cookies from a family member's car.

"Her purse was in there," says Oakes. "They left the purse but took the Girl Scout cookies."

But someone made off with a lot more than cookies Monday night.  The sheriff's office reports someone broke into two unlocked garages in the early morning hours, one on Wexford Court and another on Tremont Road.   The thief or thieves made off with one vehicle, more than $3,000 in cash, and a mini laptop and iPod.

Despite the recent break-ins, neighbors feel its still a safe area. They're hoping the incidents can be a reminder to others to lock their things up and keep them safe.

"One incident is not going to change my mind about the feeling of the security of my kids or myself or my family," says Leo Sawalah, who's lived in the neighborhood for twelve years.

"I'm really not worried. There's only so much you can do, as long as you're car is locked. If somebody wants to get in, they'll get in," says Chris Oakes.

The sheriff's office doesn't have any suspects, but residents say they'll be on the lookout.  They enjoy the neighborhood, and are still proud to call it home.

"I feel it's one of the safest areas in town, I feel it still is," says Sawalah.

If you have any information related to these crimes or any other break-ins, call the Lucas County Sheriff's office at 419-213-4977.

**Correction: This article initially stated this neighborhood was located in Maumee.  It has a Maumee mailing address, but it actually located in the Springfield Township.  The article has been changed to reflect this accuracy.**
