Police: Woman says rifle fired during twirl

Posted: Updated:

AMITY, Ind. (AP) - A central Indiana woman was arrested on a preliminary charge of criminal recklessness after telling police she accidentally fired a .44 Magnum rifle while twirling it as seen on the 1950s Western television show "The Rifleman."

The Indianapolis Star reports 40-year-old Linda Smith was arrested Friday after she allegedly fired the shot through the floor of her apartment in Amity, 15 miles south of Indianapolis. Timothy Moore told the Johnson County police the shot came through his ceiling, hit a clock and lodged in the wall. No one was injured.

Police said Smith knew the rifle was loaded, but thought the safety was on.

Smith could not be reached for comment Sunday by The Associated Press because there was no telephone listing for her.
