Recent rain prolongs flooding in western parts of the area

Posted: Updated:
EDGERTON, Ohio -

Some rivers in far northwest Ohio and southern Michigan have been flooding for nearly a week, and the recent rain will prolong this period of high water.

Nearly an inch of rain fell in many areas from Tuesday night through Wednesday afternoon.

Flood Warnings are in effect for Fulton, Henry, Defiance, and Paulding Counties of Ohio, plus Branch County, Michigan. A Flood Advisory continues in Calhoun County, Michigan.

In Fulton County, the Bean Creek is rising once again.  It crested more than 2' above flood stage, on Friday of last week.  On the heels of this week's rain, it is rising again, and will crest near flood stage later this week.

Farther west, the Tiffin River crested about 3' above flood stage last weekend.  It has only fallen about 1' over the past few days, and the continued fall will be delayed slightly by the recent rain.  It should drop below flood stage this weekend.

Near Edgerton, in western Williams County, the Saint Joseph River crested about 3' above flood stage on Monday.  It has only fallen about a foot since then, and the midweek rain is now causing it to rise slightly.  The National Weather Service only expects it to rise several inches before falling again, this weekend.

In Defiance, the Maumee River crested about a foot above flood stage on Saturday.  It has fallen 4', but is rising again on the heels of the midweek rain.  It is expected to crest within a foot of flood stage later this week.

North of the state line, in northern Branch and Calhoun Counties, the Saint Joe river is near flood stage, and it is expected to continue to rise a few more inches before cresting, later this week.

Agricultural land is under water near these rivers, and a few secondary roads may be closed for a few more days.

Thursday's disturbance should produce around or less than a quarter inch, so it should not significantly add to the problems.  Dry weather from Friday through the middle of the weekend should allow rivers a chance to recover.
