You can catch plenty of fresh fish this time of year along the Maumee River this time of year. But if you thaw frozen fish in a bucket of water, that's a health violation.

One restaurant is at odds with the health department over the wording on its latest health inspection report.

That restaurant is Sidelines III at Telegraph and Alexis. It had 13 violations during its most recent standard inspection, including "damp and soiled cloths stored on work surfaces," "improper reheating of pulled pork in the warmer ," and "fish thawing in the three-compartment sink with soiled dishes."

As far as that last one goes, the co-owner of Sidelines III tells 13abc, "They actually wrote down the wrong information. That is absolutely 100% false."

The fish, he explained, was in a separate sink basin. One dirty dish, he said, was in another.

After the inspection came back, the co-owner said he went down to the health department, adding, "I was very upset ... They completely apologized and said they were going to talk to the inspector." In his words, the other violations were small,"the big was one the fish thawing, and that one was just not true."

On one hand, the director of the Food Safety Division at the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department admits there could have been more details on the report.

But, he adds, the way they were thawing fish was still wrong.

"There was not fish floating in dirty water with soiled dishes. That is not the case at all," explained Jerry Bingham. "However, there was fish thawing in a bucket inside the three compartment sink ... And that is a violation."

Another restaurant with 13 violations? Madison Bistro on Madison Avenue in Toledo.

It's been on the Restaurant Report Card before, and this time had seven repeat violations, such as "heavy build-up on the potato slicer from the previous day," "no hand soap" - it was then provided before the inspection continued, and "a bag of hotdogs had to be thrown away after the inspector wrote the hotdogs were not date-marked correctly."

13abc left a message for the manager at Madison Bistro. We are still waiting to hear back.

If you're hunting for a clean restaurant, you might be able to bag one on Woodville Road in Oregon. The Big Apple Deli had zero violations."

One employee credits the years of experience of a hard-working and loyal staff.

Consider that a New York style slice of advice.

Here are some other restaurants that had a clean bill of health during their most recent inspections:

  • Loma Linda Mexican Restaurant on Airport Highway in Swanton
  • Red Lobster on Monroe Street in Toledo
  • Arby's on Navarre in Oregon

Plus, three restaurants all on Dussel Drive in Maumee:

  • Biggby Coffee
  • Sam's Diner
  • Wendy's

All of them were violation-free.
