Kids alert apartment residents to fire

Posted: Updated:

Kids playing basketball spotted smoke from a fire at an apartment complex on Saturday afternoon and alerted residents to get out of the building.

Trezion Stokes was one of the kids who helped out. "I walked into the building with him and they were ringing buzzers and stuff and I started knocking on the lady's door."

So did Todd Yates. "So I went in and was like, Hello, anybody in here and I was knocking on doors trying to get people's attention."

A resident says she was in the shower when she heard them banging on her door screaming about a fire.

Springfield Township Fire Chief Barry Couisno says heavy smoke and flames were shooting out of the second story when crews arrived. "Most of the flame damage is all to one unit, we did have some smoke damage that extended to some of the other units upstairs."

The chief says the fire was knocked down within ten minutes and that the quick action saved the majority of the apartments. "If the fire would have extended past the ceiling drywall and got up into the attic, it very well would have potentially affected the whole building."

The fire appears to have started in one unit. The resident was not home at the time and no injuries were reported, but the apartment was destroyed. Surrounding apartments sustained smoke damage.

Residents say they are thankful for the kids that saw the fire and alerted them to the danger.

The Red Cross is offering assistance to those displaced by the fire.

The city of Toledo has big plans for the Reynolds Road corridor, and it's shelling out big bucks. Just last week, the city agreed to buy the site of the former Southwyck mall for $3M. That's if it can land a developer within 120 days. The designs call for a corporate headquarters. Southwyck closed in 2008. So did the Clarion hotel next door. The K-Mart next to that also pulled out, but today there's a welcome sign for some: A "now open" sign. It's on the front of the former K-Mart, showing of...
