2 Toledo firefighters injured in Monday fire

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, Ohio -

Two Toledo firefighters went to the hospital Monday morning after a fire in West Toledo. It happened in the 3600 block of Berkerly near Berdan.

One was treated for a minor burn and the other for heat exhaustion.  13abc is told the injured firefighters were treated and returned to duty Monday.

The soaring temperatures were the biggest obstacle for fire fighters.

"It's the first real warm day and it's a pretty stubborn fire, physically it can be pretty demanding," said Lt. Matthew Hertzfeld of the Toledo Fire Department.

After carrying 60-70 pounds of gear into a fire that's several hundred degrees, firefighters need to recharge.  That process is called "rehabbing".  Vital signs are checked and everyone is given plenty of liquids to re hydrate.

"When you go to a fire your adrenalin is pumping, the heat you don't really notice.  When you notice it is when you come out.  You're tried, you're exhausted when you've had the strenuous workout," said Lt. Hertzfeld.  "We just take a look at everybody, take vital signs.  Make sure we're hydrated.  The big thing is we make sure we keep an eye on each other."

The home was occupied but no one was home at the time.  Some of Toledo's newest firefighters learned a lesson fighting this fire.

"It's one thing to talk about it, it's one thing to go through the fire academy but there are several brand new rookies here today and it's a real eye opener when hit the street and get your first fire and you factor in a really hot day it really opens your eyes to how tough and how strenuous the job can be," said Lt. Hertzfeld.

The cause of the fire has still not yet been determined.
