28 hurt as bus hits car, shuts down NB I-75 near Cygnet

UPDATE:  28 people are recovering Wednesday morning after an old school bus slid sideways on the interstate and rear-ended a car.

It happened around 10:30 p.m. in the northbound lanes of I-75, just north of the Cygnet exit.

Seven people were inside a Toyota Camry, including a 7-month-old, 2-year-old and a 5-year-old who was sitting on her father's lap unrestrained.

The bus was carrying workers from Hearthside Food Solutions, the former Consolidated Biscuit, in McComb factory to Toledo. Approximately 30 people were on board.

Investigators received reports of a white van traveling "erratically." Troopers say it may have cut off the Camry, causing the driver to veer in front of the bus.

Officers found the van pulled over at a nearby rest stop. They questioned the driver, whom they describe as from our of state and "lost." She may face a citation.

Life Flight air-lifted one bus passenger, Marquan Williams, 18, to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center. He is said to have serious but non life-threatening injuries.

24 people were taken to Wood. Co. Hospital.  The hospital called in extra crews to help treat the patients.  Several others were taken to Blanchard Valley Hospital in Findlay.

A second bus, which is contracted by the cookie-producing factory to transport workers, stopped to pick up those unharmed after the crash. It continues to Toledo with 9 people, when an additional employee requested medical treatment and checked in to a local hospital.

Still no word on any citations.
