Irish Hills businesses prep for thousands of NASCAR fans

Posted: Updated:

NASCAR racing returns to Michigan International Speedway next weekend.

Businesses are getting ready for thousands of fans to flock to the small village of Brooklyn.

13 ABC's Christine Long reports on the annual boost for restaurants in the Irish Hills.

Howard Quibell and Jan Goodall from Ontario, Canada, are a pair of early birds at Michigan International Speedway getting ready to hang NASCAR driver flags from their camper, like their new neighbors for the week.

The Tony Stewart and Dale Earnhart, Jr., fans are several days early for the race, but the two are not just in town to watch 40 drivers turn left for 400 miles.

This is their annual vacation time to explore the Irish Hills.

"Mostly we tour around and go to restaurants and stuff like that," says Quibell.

"We are ready and hopefully we'll see them all in here this year," says Karen Kelley, manager of JR's Hometown Grill & Pub.

This marks the second NASCAR season for JR's which is located north of MIS on Brooklyn Highway.

The staff is ready for the crowds of fans hungry and ready to spend money.

"We definitely stock up on beer, alcohol, couple extra food items to prepare for all the extra bodies that we may be having," says Kelley.

The death toll continues to climb in the Gaza Strip as Hamas and Israel continue to fight. The bloodshed may be happening overseas, but, for some, it's hitting close to home. Dozens of people stood at the corner of Secor and Central Monday, calling on Israel to end the violence.
