Stranger danger incident reported at Geneva & Spencer

Posted: Updated:

A Toledo couple is worried about the safety of kids in their neighborhood.  They say a man approached their 12-year-old daughter and told her to get in his car near Spencer and Geneva on June 1. The girl's father, LaMont Walker, says he called police twice and waited for forty minutes for a response, but never saw officers come to his location.

Then on June 10, Walker says his daughter was approached a second time near Spencer and Carlton.  This time he followed the car and called police who met him near Woodsdale Park and were able to question the alleged suspect.  Walker says the responding officers told him they were not able to make an arrest because there was not enough evidence.  TPD leaders confirm they are investigating the situation but say they cannot release a name until there is an official charge.  The father says he is concerned because he's seen the same man approach other girls in his neighborhood.

"Keep your eyes open and watch your kids because we're going to have to be the ones to catch this guy, not the police. We're going to have to be the ones to look out for each other because it's our community," says Walker.  The father goes on to say he is proud of his daughter's actions.

"She was observant, that's why we were able to catch the guy so quick. She was aware of the lessons me and her mom taught her, so I'm happy for her for that."

Police say they've gotten fewer calls about 'stranger danger' since school let out, but say that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. They encourage parents to keep a close eye on their kids and contact them with any suspicious activity.
