Mom of missing baby goes to court

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, Ohio -

The mother of missing East Toledo toddler, Elaina Steinfurth, faced a judge Thursday after being arrested Wednesday.  Angela Steinfurth is facing an endangering children charge.

She is not charged with the baby's disappearance.

Angela Steinfurth was sobbing in court Thursday as she stood before the judge.  In an affidavit filed by police, investigators say Angela admitted to knowing Elaina suffered a serious physical injury, but didn't get medical treatment for the child.  Police will not elaborate on the injury.

"She's guilty of not taking care of that baby like she should have.  She should have taken that baby to the hospital," said Angela's father Richard Schiewe.

Her father was in court Thursday along with baby Elaina's father, TJ.  The charges still don't reveal any more clues as to where the baby is right now or her condition.

13abc asked police if they believe anyone else had anything to do with the injury to the baby.

"I'm not going to comment at this point," said Toledo Police Captain Wes Bombrys.

Toledo police gave an update on the investigation Thursday.  They won't say when the baby was injured or if they believe the mother knows the baby's location.

"She doesn't know where the baby's at, but she knew what happened to the baby," said Schiewe.

Police did say an interview with Angela Wednesday led the charges and a Wednesday night search on Federal Street.

"I'm not going to comment specifically on what we were looking for.  We've had all the search warrants sealed at this time for a reason," said Bombrys.

As her family supports Angela, Schiewe was asked if he believes the toddler is alive.

"No," was his answer inside Thursday at Toledo Municipal Court.

Police say they are treating this as a missing person case.
