US, Canada to poison lamprey in St. Marys River

Posted: Updated:

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. (AP) - U.S. and Canadian authorities are collaborating to kill invasive sea lamprey in the St. Marys River that links lakes Superior and Huron.

The Evening News of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. reports that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada will start work about July 1 on efforts to poison lea lamprey larvae burrowed in the river bottom.

The poison application will run through about Aug. 31.

Blood-sucking lamprey migrated to the Great Lakes through shipping canals in the first half of the 20th century and decimated trout, whitefish and other sport and commercial species.

The fight against lamprey has cost at least $400 million over five decades and has cut their numbers by about 90%.
