Cyclists ignore weather for annual Bike to the Bay

Posted: Updated:

More than 800 cyclists ignored Saturday's threatening weather and biked for a cause at the 24th annual Bike to the Bay. The ride supports the fight against MS.

The riders began their journey at the Lucas County Fair Grounds and could ride as much as 150 miles for the weekend.

Mike Gilmore has biked to the bay for the past 23 years. "Originally when I started riding, I didn't know anyone who had MS, but now I do."

Now he rides in honor of a close friend and his sister-in-law, who was diagnosed with MS 19 years ago.

"She is doing pretty good right now, but a lot of ups and downs."

Multiple Sclerosis is a chronic, often disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system. Symptoms range from numbness in the limbs to paralysis or loss of vision. The progress of the disease is unpredictable and varies widely from one person to another.

The ride raises nearly half a million dollars each year for MS research.

The death toll continues to climb in the Gaza Strip as Hamas and Israel continue to fight. The bloodshed may be happening overseas, but, for some, it's hitting close to home. Dozens of people stood at the corner of Secor and Central Monday, calling on Israel to end the violence.
