Boaters scared off the water by drunks, Coast Guard cracking down

Posted: Updated:

The U.S. Coast Guard is cracking down on drinking and boating with Operation Dry Water.

Still, some boaters say it's just too dangerous to have their 4th of July celebration on the water.

Boater Judy Hass said, "We would get 20-25 people on our boat, head on down to the fireworks, and of course we were all partying and having a good time."

Judy says this year, she's staying on shore. "Because of all the accidents that have happened and you don't know what you are doing and it's just too dangerous."

Rob Powloski, who's been boating for 35 years, agrees. "It scares me to the point where you don't want to be around them. They have run into the bridges already. Run into other boats. I know one boat that was literally cut in half."

That's why the Coast Guard is taking a closer look at each boat this holiday.  Sr. Chief Jay Galazin says, That water is a dangerous place and if the person who is operating the boat is drunk, it's just like driving a car into someone or smashing into another boat."

Operation Dry Water is a national event meant to educate people about the dangers of boating under the influence.

It officially ends on Sunday night, but the Coast Guard will continue their  increased presence in the water all week to keep boaters safe for the holiday.
