Honor Flight NWO cuts flights and applications due to lack of funding

Posted: Updated:

Honor Flight Northwest Ohio offers free trips to Washington, D.C. to war veterans, but now the non-profit is running out of cash.

Effective Monday, Honor Flight NWO will no longer accept applications from Korean and Vietnam veterans. They only eligible applicants will be WWII vets who have not flown with Honor Flight in the past or those who have not seen the memorials in D.C.

Board members say the reason for the cutbacks is the growing list of applicants. As of the end of June, there were more than 600 veterans on the waiting list.

The non-profit says they no longer have the funding needed to keep running a large number of trips each year. This year they are planning two trips, one was in May and the other is this October. During 2014, Honor Flight NWO is planning two trips to the capitol.

It's unclear how long some of those veterans already on the list will have to wait for their trip to D.C.
